Remastered by T. Wiley 07/16/2003.
Comments: Original recording was overwhelming. I actually had to lower the levels on this one
so nobody's speakers would blow out! Not much done here other than some of the hiss was
removed without appling Noise Reduction and the show was retracked. D1t07(Looks Like Rain)
Drop out @ :08 both channels removed. Fades between D2 and D3 fixed. D2 and D3 are now
seemless. D3t04 cass flip @ beginning of track removed. Please note 3 cass gens in the
lineage. We can only hope a better copy will surface!
Thanks to Charlie Miller and Torbjorn for the SHN seed!
Enjoy!!

We spent the night before the show in Amsterdam, some miles closer to the show. As a group we were like kids before Christmas, wondering what surprises lay ahead in the next 24 hours.
The roads were like ice. We got to Utica some time before noon and the bars weren't selling alcohol yet (too early) yet the bar we were in was half full.
We dropped acid before the doors open & when they did, nobody was there...We made our way to the sound board (general admission) and piled our coats and gear right there.
It's a weird round arena, with garish lighting and distinct wood grain floor that was very active in a psychedelic way. The ceiling was a round 3D geometric, acoustic panel that was also freaky. There were jugglers on the floor, frisbee being played, between the sound board and stage...I think they closed the NYS Thruway because of Cold Rain & Snow. Not sure how many people but we had room to dance all the way to the stage.
Equipment failure all night long. I think Bob threw a guitar and his monitor didn't work. Keith was passed out on his piano and he and Donna were fighting on stage.
We were all pretty much blasted. I was in some kind of hyper space, were the band turned into animated characters and then everyone and thing was cartoon like animation. Didn't last but through the end of Black Peter and the animation subsided.
The show was magical on many levels. Equipment failure, personnel issues, heroin, diabetes, camel cigarettes were taking their toll.
One thing for sure ...Once in awhile, you get shown the light. In the strangest of places if you look at it right...

MOSTLY, I am eternally GRATEFUL for being able to listen to any of these shows, and think it's FANTASTIC we can.
as for donna and keiths last show, not true, that would be the benefit in Oakland a month later 2-17-79, which rocks above this for sure, but this is a fine recording for what the recorder had to work with...
Thanks for posting..

Subject: Now the critics must stop
Please I thank my lucky stars every day for the caring soles that took the time and effort to post the shows here for those of us that actually did go to shows like this.
I got on the "BUS" 1977 at Englishtown 18 years later and 300 shows I still say thank you tapers and posters.
Keep up the outstanding work remember this is part of "MY" history and I never took in a "BAD" show or never took a bad picture of my childern.
The Dead the shows the people were MY life for a long time. GO BUY A DICKS IF YOU WANT OUTSTANDING QUALITY. But hey what do I know.
Thanks again guys it the memories I hold dear and you can't put a price on that!!!!!!!!!!!

What's audibly missing is how Billy synchs along w/ Jerrys notes almost instantly, changes the rhythem, pulls in Weir who lays down some hard chords and sets Jerry up for the jump to Eyes.
Check out how Jerry gets off in Eyes. A ton of notes played here but listen for when he "skims the stone" over the top (7:00 mark). He knows a good thing and does it again.
It's not Englishtown or Iowa State Fairgrounds or whichever is your fave but always thought moments like this were what it was all about.
